What do you do when you can't get a good night's sleep on your ordinary bed, but you can't afford to go out and buy a memory foam bed or mattress?

The answer is simple - you get a memory foam mattress topper instead.

Just like the beds, there are many memory foam mattress toppers to choose from, ranging from around £100 to £400.

Quality is everything - and of course, you get what you pay for.

The original "Memory Foam" was intially developed by NASA to reduce the effects of G-forces on the astronauts in space flight.

The material effectively cushioned the impacts of the various forces in flight and gae the astronauts greater protection.

Would you be able to tell the difference between a well known brand like Tempur and a non-branded equivalent?

To be honest, we doubt anyone would notice - espcially in a shop. Whether there is a difference in quality, we can't say for sure - all we know is that one brand is patented and you know what you're getting for your money.

A memory foam mattress topper is actually like a mini-mattress, usually between 7 and 10 mm thick.

The best ones come with removable, washable covers.

The memory foam mattresses that look like nothing more than a thin piece of uncovered foam, the types found in "discount warehouses", are probably best avoided.
